Belarus and Kenya pledge to strengthen their relations as Minsk endeavors to forge alliances with African nations.
The presidents of Kenya and Belarus have affirmed their commitment to expanding bilateral relations, according to a statement from the Kenyan presidency. The talks, held in Nairobi on Monday, come as Belarus, facing diplomatic isolation, seeks to strengthen its ties with African nations. Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, known for his close alliance with Moscow, visited Equatorial Guinea the day before as part of an African tour to enhance connections across the continent.
During the meeting in Nairobi, the leaders agreed to broaden cooperation in renewable energy, trade, investment, and education. Kenya expressed interest in leveraging Belarus' agricultural technology for mutual prosperity. Notably, the statements did not touch upon Russia's involvement in Ukraine, an issue that has led to Western sanctions against Belarus and Lukashenko's regime. Amid the ongoing conflict, both Russia and Ukraine have sought support in Africa.
Lukashenko's visit to Kenya is part of a broader effort to intensify collaboration and establish closer ties between Minsk and African nations. The Belarusian president's engagements include a recent visit to Zimbabwe and the signing of cooperation agreements with Equatorial Guinea, focusing on the promotion of Belarusian products in African markets.
